Moon Phases of Life Ministry Newborn Hearing Screening Policy Purpose: The purpose of this policy is to ensure that all newborns in our care are offered the opportunity for early detection of potential hearing concerns, allowing for timely follow-up, diagnosis, and intervention to support optimal developmental outcomes. Background: Hearing is critical for language development, social-emotional bonding, and cognitive growth. National guidelines recommend that all newborns receive a hearing screening before 1 month of age, ideally prior to discharge from the birth setting or within the first weeks of life. Policy: Moon Phases of Life Ministry supports the universal screening of all newborns for potential hearing concerns. As a traditional midwifery and naturopathic practice, we honor the importance of informed consent and parental choice. Procedures: Screening Availability: We offer newborn hearing screenings using an Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) machine. Screenings may be performed: In-office at either our Woodstock or Island Lake locations. In the comfort of your home for an additional travel fee, depending on your location. Appointments can be scheduled by contacting our office directly. Informed Choice: Parents will be educated on the purpose, benefits, and limitations of newborn hearing screening. Informed consent will be obtained prior to performing the screening. Documentation: Results of the OAE hearing screening will be recorded and shared with the parents. If screening is declined, a signed declination form will be completed and kept in the client’s record. Follow-up: If the newborn does not pass the initial screening, a repeat screening will be recommended. If the second screening is also not passed, referral will be made to a pediatric audiologist or ENT specialist for further evaluation. Respect for Parental Authority: As a holistic, family-centered practice, we honor the rights of parents to make informed decisions that align with their values and beliefs. Payment & Cancellation Policy Payment is due at the time of service. If a newborn hearing screening is scheduled and the appointment is missed or canceled with less than 24 hours’ notice, a 50% fee no-show or late cancellation fee will be charged. This fee helps honor the time and preparation involved in offering personalized care. Please be respectful of our schedule and the needs of other families by providing advance notice when rescheduling is necessary.
